Settling into the holiday spirit

It feels good to be easing into the end of the year after a hectic - but fantastic - AU 2023. For me it started with the Autodesk Switzerland holiday gathering in Bern. I was able to catch up with Jeremy Tammik, who I’m happy to say is recovering very well after a 6m (!) fall. AU 2023 Day 1

After a great trip to Stanford on Friday, we had some last-minute preparation to do for our AU exhibit at Pier 9 on Saturday morning. We headed into the office - after having to explain our way through a security cordon along the waterfront due to APEC 2023 - and printed out a bunch of legal waivers for study participants to sign. In SF ahead of AU 2023

On Wednesday I headed back across to Zurich airport to fly to San Francisco for a few days ahead of Autodesk University 2023 in Las Vegas. The flight was direct and largely uneventful: I didn't sleep but did feel moderately sane when I arrived in SF. I hopped on BART from the airport to Embarcadero - it's really the best mode of transport if you arrive around 5pm. My room in the Hyatt has a view across SF’s financial district. Liguria and the Cinque Terre

On Saturday we packed the car and headed through the Grand San Bernard tunnel from Switzerland to Italy for a 6-day break. Our first stop across the border was in Aosta, where we started the carb-fest in earnest. (Our eldest son has just started his 2nd year at university, so wasn't able to join us on this trip.) Our new gate, designed in AutoCAD

So I made a thing. Well, strictly speaking I designed a thing that then got made by someone else. We’d been looking for a new gate for some time, but never really found something we liked. I ended up drawing something in AutoCAD (of course) – taking inspiration from a number of images I found on the web – and we took it to Leutwiler SA, a local company who implements custom metalwork projects, including gates and fences. I’ve just come back from 2 weeks off work. We didn’t go very far, but did enjoy the Swiss countryside, as well as the national day on August 1st. Anyway, it’s back to the grindstone, with some looming deadlines around preparing content for AU 2023. A musical summer

It’s music festival season in Europe, and we’ve been making the most of getting out to concerts and festivals in Switzerland. The season kicked off for us while I was in Delft with my daughter: my two sons went with a friend to the Frauenfeld OpenAir festival – the largest hip-hop festival in Europe, apparently – to see Travis Scott. Visiting the MX3D bridge in Amsterdam and playing football in Munich

After a really interesting few days in Delft at CAAD Futures 2023, on Friday morning my daughter and I headed to Amsterdam on our way to Munich. The main goal of visiting Amsterdam was – of course – to visit the MX3D bridge, particularly as it’s due to be decommissioned later this year. (I know, I know: it doesn’t seem as though the bridge has been there long, but the permit was a limited one – appropriate for a temporary art installation – and there seems to have been some resistance to the project from a local heritage preservation... A meeting of former Autodeskers in Neuchâtel

Yesterday evening I popped along to La Cantine in Colombier to attend a get-together of former Autodesk Neuchâtel employees. I was only expecting a few people to be there, but there must have been somewhere between 50 and 100 of my former colleagues there during the course of the evening. La Cantine is a restaurant run by an old friend and former Autodesker, Antonio Barroca, and I’ve mentioned both Antonio and his restaurant in the past. This year’s snow week

I think I’ve mentioned in the past that in Switzerland the annual winter half-term break – the Winterferien or semaine blanche – is basically meant for skiing or snowboarding. Or sledging, I suppose. The canton of Neuchatel has its Republic Day on March 1st, so the holiday week always falls to include this day (other cantons have theirs sometime earlier in February). Reflections on what’s coming in 2023

Today is my first day back after a much-needed 3-week break. For most of that period we were up in the mountains, and split our time between snowboarding and snowshoeing with the puppy. We had some unseasonably mild weather in the Alps, over the break, but we did still manage to make the most of what snow there was. During the course of the break, I spent some time thinking back on 2022 and looking ahead to 2023. Winding down for the festive season

Autodesk offices in most places around the globe have been closed this week as part of an extended holiday break. From my side I’ve managed to spend a couple of days on the slopes, here in Switzerland, although I ended up coming back down to the lakeside as there’s a strange weather blip where it’s currently warm and wet enough to be raining in the Alps for the lead-up to Christmas. On Wednesday I came across to Dublin for the latter part of the APS Accelerator being held, here. Kicking off the holiday season

Last week – coincidentally on Thanksgiving in the US – Autodesk Switzerland held its first Christmas event since the beginning of the pandemic. The team based in our Gümligen office (which is on the southern outskirts of Bern) joined those of us working from home from various locations throughout the country at a nice restaurant in Bern’s city centre for a delicious meal. Our children’s school holidays came right after this year’s Autodesk University in New Orleans, so I was highly relieved (and not a little stunned) that I came back from such a large event without Covid. (I managed to get it at the last large gathering I attended, so it’s just possible that my resistance is still in place. Either way, it was a relief!) Of hiking and climbing

I’m back from our 2-week summer break, which we spent this year in Switzerland and Germany. The majority of the first week was spent up in the Bernese Oberland, a region we enjoy immensely. We were there all together – I was with my wife and our three kids – but in the mornings the “grown ups” left the kids to sleep in while we walked up to the centre of Adelboden. It’s been some time since I’ve shared any personal news, so I thought I’d throw a whole load of it together in an easily ignorable post. Our 20th anniversary balloon trip

My wife and I celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary back in November. We celebrated as a family with our three great kids making vegan sushi for us all.
