In the last post we talked about a recent optimization to Dasher 360, where we implemented a point cloud rather than individual SVG-based markers for our various sensors. As mentioned, last time, this was pretty straightforward to get working, but did add some complexity: rather than having seperate DOM-resident markers – which can easily have separate tooltips assigned – we now have a single object and need to be able to display tooltips when individual points in the cloud are hovered over. At the Forge Accelerator in Munich, back in December, while I spent most of my time answering what questions I could about Forge I also showed up with a question of my own. Adding a context menu command to objects in the Forge Viewer

I’ve been spending quite a bit of time working on our “Dasher 360” prototype, recently. Which is, of course, based on the Forge Viewer. A simple – but handy – feature I added today is to add a context menu item to be displayed when objects are selected – and right-clicked – inside the Viewer. Creating a vertical toolbar extension for the Autodesk viewer

As mentioned in the last post, we’re now going to take a closer look at writing extensions for the Autodesk View & Data API. To start with, we’re going to create an extension which displays a vertical toolbar docked to the left of the Autodesk viewer. This toolbar will be centred on the viewer area and only contain three buttons: two will be toggles – with events assigned to when they’re both clicked and unclicked – while the third will simply launch an action. Creating extensions for the Autodesk viewer

I’ve been working on a prototype implementation of a research project that makes use of the View & Data API for its visualization. It’s interesting to get back into using this API, especially as it’s a fundamental piece of the Forge platform. As we expect this particular application to grow, over time, we’re using extensions to house logically separate parts of the UI implementation. Extensions are a great mechanism for encapsulating functionality: they’re basically JavaScript objects that have load() and unload() methods that are called when the viewer loads/unloads them. Controlling robots from inside AutoCAD – Part 3

After seeing how we can use Cylon.js to control Sphero’s Ollie and BB-8 robots from a browser, and then using the same mechanism from inside a custom AutoCAD command, today we’re going to drive these cute little bots based on AutoCAD geometry. The idea is that we’ll decompose regular curves – whether lines, arcs, polylines or splines – and use the “segments” as movement instructions for our robots. Jigsawify.com goes mobile-friendly

After going down the path of making this blog responsive, it made sense to do the same for Jigsawify.com: I think it’s a really nice illustration of the potential for AutoCAD I/O to use the web-site from your mobile phone to generate a DWG in the cloud. The site itself was functional enough on mobile: the issue related more to making the UI usable without having to zoom in and out all the time both to see the results and then use the various UI elements. Visualizing the AutoCAD I/O API

I’ve been working with AutoCAD I/O quite heavily over the last week or two – mainly spending time fleshing out my Jigsawify web application well in advance of AU2015 – and came across this helpful trick for visualizing an OData-based REST API graphically: you can copy and paste the XML schema for the AutoCAD I/O API into a file and then load it into the handy XOData tool. Autodesk Technical Summit 2015

Last week I was in Singapore for our annual, internal, two-day technical summit. Upwards of 500 members of Autodesk’s various engineering and technical teams gathered together at the iconic Marina Bay Sands for the event. The hotel was pretty amazing. Having been told my room number (4619), I first exited the elevator at the 4th floor. It’s only then that I realised the rooms on each floor were numbered in double digits, and so my room was on the 46th! It’s live! Our entry for the recent VR Hackathon in San Francisco has received a significant amount of spit and polish (OK, perhaps not the best mental image) over the last couple of weeks and is now ready for prime time (i.e. Beta testing ;-). Check it out at http://vrok.it! It should work well with Chrome, Firefox or Safari, although for best results I’d stick with Chrome on mobile devices. The 2nd VR Hackathon, which took place in San Francisco over the weekend, was an absolute blast. It was held at Galvanize, a co-working space about a 15-minute walk from our 1 Market Street office. The venue was great: it had plenty of space but also with a fair amount of natural light (very important for those of us getting over our jetlag). A reminder that proposals are open for AU2015 until May 26th. I’ve just submitted two, myself. Of the three topics I had in mind – relating to VR, AutoCAD I/O and TypeScript – I decided to submit proposals on the first two: I’ll do my best to use TypeScript for one or both of the other two (assuming they get accepted) which will at least give people some exposure to how the technology works.
