Yesterday I headed across to Esslingen, a town south-east from Zurich, to meet with a large Swiss customer of ours, Basler & Hofmann. They’re an independent engineering, planning and consulting company with 600 employees in 4 countries (although most are based here in Switzerland). A visit to Autodesk’s Advanced Manufacturing Facility in the UK

I didn’t think, on Monday, that I’d be visiting the UK this week. So it came as a surprise that on Tuesday I ended up buying a flight to head across to Birmingham on Wednesday, coming back Friday. You’re probably thinking, “ouch, that must have been expensive!” – which was exactly my expectation, looking into flights – but it turns out that at this time of year (probably due to the demand from skiers) EasyJet runs daily flights between Geneva and Birmingham. Coming to Milan for a Mixed Reality Meetup

On Tuesday, I’ll be travelling to Milan and back (on the same day, by train) to present at a “3D / Mixed Reality” Meetup hosted at the beautiful new Microsoft House, headquarters of Microsoft Italia. I’ll be talking about Forge and AR/VR, and I’ll no doubt include a Dancing Robot or two, I expect. It’s pretty cool to be visiting Microsoft House: it was designed by Swiss architect Herzog & De Meuron (a good customer of Autodesk’s who I visited earlier this year in Basel) and it looks absolutely stunning. AEC Hackathon is coming to Munich (and so am I)

I’ve been interested in participating in – or at least attending – an AEC Hackathon for a couple of years now. I was first introduced to them during the VR Hackathons I attended in SF in 2014 and 2015 (Damon, Greg and Paul, who help organize the AEC Hackathons, were also organizing/involved in/attending the VR ones). VR guinea pigs

On Friday we had our first external visitors to the VR room at Autodesk Neuchatel. Jose and Erich came across from Amstein + Walthert, an engineering firm headquartered in Zurich. Jose had reached out to me – we’ve been in contact a few times, over the years – as he’d read about the VR room on this blog and was curious to try it out. HoloLens and Forge at the Munich Accelerator

It’s been a challenging few days of “acceleration” in Munich. We’ve had a large, highly motivated crowd, which has definitely been a highlight. On the lowlight side, during the last 24 hours we’ve had our first major outage of the Forge platform. A core service, ACM – our Access Control Manager – went down early yesterday morning (for us here in Europe). This impacted both the Data Management and Model Derivative APIs, without which you can’t really use the Forge viewer, for example, as well as various other cloud-connected products such as Fusion 360 and Collaboration for Revit. As usual, this year’s Autodesk University was a crazy tech-fest. Here’s a lightning round-up of some of the cool stuff I saw, through the lens of my personal interests and the small amount of spare time I managed to spend exploring. Tuesday was my big day at AU2016: my colleagues, Alex Tessier, and I delivered a short segment during the Construction Launchpad session attended by roughly 1,000 people. This shot gives some idea of the size of the audience. I think it’s probably the first time I’ve delivered a session with a camera showing me in close-up on the big screen. Intelligent Building Systems in Paris

On Monday I hopped on the train for Paris – which takes just under 4 hours, from Neuchatel to Gare de Lyon – to attend the Intelligent Building Systems exhibition as a guest of Schneider Electric. Leaving Neuchatel the weather was cold but stunning: Going through the Jura, though, we quickly found ourselves in snow. I arrived in Paris in time to meet up for dinner with an old friend. AR and VR in Zurich

I had a really excellent day, yesterday. I’d flown in from Munich, the night before, and stayed at the charming Zum Guten Glück restaurant/hostel in Zurich. After collecting my key I met Rob Morgan – who was also due to speak at the next day’s Expanding Immersive Design conference – and we headed out for the pre-arranged dinner together. Forge Accelerator in Munich

This is the second time I’ve been at a Forge Accelerator this year in Munich, and it seems it won’t be the last: there’ll be another one in early December, adjacent to the European DevDay being held here, and I’m pretty certain I’ll be back across for that. Over the weekend I managed to wind down nicely after giving 10+ hours of HoloLens demos on Thursday and Friday at our Design Night events (it may well have been less, but feels like it was much more). Sharing a hologram between multiple HoloLens devices – Part 2

It was an interesting week, last week, getting two HoloLens devices to coordinate. After talking about the network infrastructure, last time, today we’re going to look at other levels of the problem. Logistically there’s a requirement to have two devices: it might be possible to get it all working with a mix of devices and emulators, but that seems like a stretch. And you’d need – in any case – to test with physical devices at some point. Sharing a hologram between multiple HoloLens devices – Part 1

I’ve been starting to work on extending the “Dancing Robot” HoloLens project to have a shared hologram: basically to have the position changes shared between devices, as well as the angles and speeds of the various parts of the robot arm. There’s quite a lot to this. There needs to be a server somewhere that coordinates the messages sent between the various devices. The countdown is on… the first Design Night Switzerland is being held at la Case a Chocs in Neuchâtel on October 20th, 2016 to celebrate Autodesk Switzerland’s 25th anniversary. (It’s actually very timely, as la Case has celebrated its own 25th birthday, this year). Yesterday’s AR Meetup in Lausanne

I mentioned in yesterday’s post that Cyrille and I were heading across to Lausanne to host an AR Meetup. It’s our third Meetup for this particular group: the first was in the Autodesk office in Neuchatel, while the second and third have been held at the excellent Studio Banana. I’ve had the pleasure of having Cyrille Fauvel from the Forge team with me in Neuchatel, this week. I’ve worked with Cyrille for many years, and we continue to be interested in very similar technology areas (particularly AR/VR, IoT and robotics/UAVs). HoloGuide: an Autodesk Hackathon project

Over the last few days we’ve held Autodesk’s first internal, global Hackathon.
