VASA 0.2.0 is now available

Rhys Goldstein has been busy implementing some new features in the Voxel-based Architectural Space Analysis (VASA) package. I’ve just published a new version to the Dynamo Package Manager containing the following enhancements: Added "PathModel.GenerateSamplePoints" and "DistanceField.GenerateSamplePoints", which generate sample points according to an approximate spacing parameter. Added proximity operations ("NearestFilledAlongX", "NearestFilledAlongY", "NearestFilledAlongZ", and "NearestFilledHorizontally"), which find the filled voxel nearest to a point. Added special operations ("AutoCrop", "AutoSplit", "DensityMap", "DensityMapWithWeights"), which automatically crop, split, and create density maps from voxel models. Added new examples ("11-VASA-Path-Density.dyn" and "12-VASA-Sensor-Coverage.dyn"), which demonstrate the new features. Fixed a bug in the fill from... Read more →

VASA 0.1.2 is now available

The first version of VASA we posted to the Dynamo package manager was numbered 0.1.0. Yesterday we posted a new version with some interesting new features, not least of which is the lack of an error when you install it (this one was very much my fault: I’d neglected to mark a couple of DLLs as not being node libraries when I posted it). Using VASA with FormIt via Dynamo – Part 2

In the last post we looked at using VASA from within Dynamo for FormIt to solve mazes generated by a cool plugin created by Brett from the FormIt team. A few weeks ago I started taking a closer look at Autodesk FormIt, mainly with a view to understanding how it might integrate with VASA. FormIt is a multi-platform (which I believe in this case means Windows, iOS and web) conceptual design and analysis tool. Rhys Goldstein, the researcher behind our 2D and 3D Space Analysis toolkits, has recorded a great video introduction to VASA (an acronym for Voxel-based Architectural Space Analysis). It steps through how to install the VASA package inside Dynamo and then create a simple voxelisation of Dynamo geometry. I’ve been hinting about this for a few weeks now, but today is (very excitingly) the day for the big unveiling. My colleague Rhys Goldstein has been working his magic, once again, taking the algorithms he developed for the 2D Space Analysis package and applying them to 3-space. A minor update to Space Analysis (2D), and getting ready for 3D!

This week I’ve been getting my Revit installation working again – it had been a while since I’d used it, and it was overdue an upgrade from 2021 to 2022 – mainly because I have to publish a couple of new packages (or package versions) to the Dynamo Package Manager. The first is a minor update to the Space Analysis package, taking it from version 0.3.3 to version 0.4.0. Dynamo 2.12, MaRS v3 and the future of Space Analysis

The latest update to Dynamo Core (which for now you can use via Dynamo Sandbox) has some really interesting enhancements, both in terms of usability and performance. Check out Sol Amour’s two blog posts that introduce Dynamo Core 2.12. As it had been a while since I’d tried the MaRS graph in a new drop of Dynamo, I went ahead and loaded it. Creating additional documentation for Space Analysis in Dynamo 2.11

I mentioned last week that Dynamo 2.11 allows package owners to add additional documentation for their nodes via the enhanced Documentation Browser. I decided to give it a try, and then decided to test the possibilities around automating the process. Here’s the idea: the Space Analysis package comes with 15 different samples showing how to use its various nodes. These are all hidden away in the %appdata%\Dynamo\Dynamo [Core|Revit]\2.x\packages\SpaceAnalysis\extra folder, so lots of people don’t know they exist. It’s that time of year, where our engineering teams release the primary annual updates to our products. AutoCAD 2022 was released a couple of weeks ago, and Revit 2022 dropped yesterday. I unfortunately spend very little time in our products, these days, so I’ll leave others to extoll their various benefits. Aside from working with the Forge platform, the product (or perhaps feature-set) I spend the most time with is Dynamo. COVID Office Occupancy: a Dynamo mega-graph and blog series

I posted, back in May, about the work we’d been doing to explore the possibility of using the Space Analysis package for Dynamo to plan for post-COVID office layouts. Soon after that post our research relating to the pandemic shifted focus towards a longer-term plan of creating a “living lab” that would allow us not only to explore how design decisions might impact viral transmission, but to have these decisions based on data measured from a functioning ventilation system. Dynamo Core 2.10

Santa (meaning Sol Amour) has left one last Dynamo release under the tree for us all to enjoy over the holidays: Dynamo Core 2.10. According to Sol’s post there have been a few updates to Node Autocomplete – which I mentioned a few weeks ago – but that we should expect many more to come. And there are other updates that are likely to be of interest in this release, too – check out Sol’s blog post but also the release notes. Have you tried Node Auto Complete in Dynamo 2.9?

If so (or if not but you’re up for doing so) then the Dynamo team would like to hear from you! For some background, here’s the post on Dynamo Core 2.9 that introduces the feature. To enable the feature via Settings –> Experimental –> Enable Node Auto Complete. Then you can simple place a node (from the Library or by right-clicking on the canvas) and start to use auto-complete to find nodes to connect by Alt-clicking the input ports. After being teased with some graphics improvements coming in Dynamo, I was excited to find on returning from my recent holiday to find a new release of Dynamo Sandbox was available for testing. Saving data for selected generative designs from Revit 2021

In the last post we saw how the Data.Gate node can be used to send geometry to Revit 2021 when the “Create Revit Elements” button gets pressed from the Explore Outcomes UI for a Generative Design study.
